Part 1 – Essay Organization

  1. Hook – Grabs the reader’s attention in a unique way
    1. Picture/description – describes a scene or event related to the thesis
    2. Dialogue – discusses ideas or events related to the thesis
    3. Bold Statement – makes a statement regarding the thesis
    4. Thought/Memory – makes a connection to the thesis

 

  1. Thesis  – The overall topic discussed in the paper.  What one is trying to prove throughout the essay.

 

  1. Main Idea – a fact or opinion relating directly to the thesis (helps prove the thesis)

 

  1. Example – Is either a quote or description proving the verity (truth) of the thesis.

 

  1. Explanation – Gives the quote context in relation to the main idea.

 

  1. Thesis Explanation – gives the main idea, quote and explanation

Quotation Punctuation.

For example, “John danced on Elizer’s foot the whole night” (Wiesel 24).

“During the wedding,” John said, “I broke my ankle” (Monk 231).

 

Section 2: Terms and Definitions

  1. 1.     Metaphor – a comparison without using like or as (i.e James is a bullhorn)

 

  1. 2.     Simile – A comparison using like or as (i.e. James looked like a ghost)

 

  1. 3.     Personification – giving a non-human object human characteristics

 

  1. 4.     Origin Myth – a story, believed to be true, which tells of how people and things came to be

 

  1. 5.     Apostrophe – Addressing something/one who is dead or supernatural. (Oh, God!)

 

  1. 6.     Theme – A topic discussed during the course of a piece of literature. (i.e violence, death, love ect.

 

  1. Assonance – Vowel (a,e,i,o,u) sounds which repeat in the beginning, middle or end of at least three words in a line.

 

  1. Consonance – Consonant sounds which repeat in the beginning, middle or end of at least three words in a line.

 

  1. Symbolism – An object represents an idea (through similarities or connections) (i.e. a dove is a symbol of peace)

 

  1. Oral Tradition – Stories passed down from generation to generation through verbal storytelling and not written word.

 

  1. 1st person narrator – Speaks in I.  Is usually unreliable because he/she may not accurately depict events, actions or motives.

 

  1. 3rd person narrator – Speaks in he/she.  Is usually reliable, can be everywhere at once and knows everyone’s thoughts

 

  1. Setting – Where a poem, story or play takes place (time period included).

 

  1. Suspense – When an author reveals information slowly during a tense or climatic part of the story.

 

Part 3: Open Ended
