Moral Dilemma 5

A madman who has threatened to explode several bombs in crowded areas has been apprehended. Unfortunately, he has already planted the bombs and they are scheduled to go off in a short time. It is possible that hundreds of people may die. The authorities cannot make him divulge the location of the bombs by conventional methods. He refuses to say anything and requests a lawyer to protect his fifth amendment right against self-incrimination. In exasperation, some high level official suggests torture. This would be illegal, of course, but the official thinks that it is nevertheless the right thing to do in this desperate situation. Do you agree? If you do, would it also be morally justifiable to torture the mad bomber’s innocent wife if that is the only way to make him talk? Why?

I believe that we should torture him and anyone close to him if its the only way to make him talk. Once he realize we aren’t bluffing he is gonna talk, If he don’t budge we let her die because until he speaks his family is better dead then the thousand innocents.

  2. Will Spring says:

I think they should torture the bomber but shouldn’t torture his wife. His wife had nothing to do with the situation and shouldn’t have to suffer for her husbands actions. They should use her to convince him to reveal the location of the bombs and/or make it seem like their torturing her and get the information out of him.

I would agree to torture his wife. I honestly do not care if it is illegal to torture, we need him to let us know where the bombs are so if he does not wanna talk we can cut, poke, shred, shock, drown, peel, punch, taze,or freez till he understand that this is real

  4. Michael DeCastro says:

This situation they shouldn’t torture his wife because she doesn’t have anything to do with her husbands plan to kill people. They could make the guy believe that they are beating his wife when they really aren’t. If he doesn’t talk they would have to find the bombs themselves

  5. Rafael Eulalio says:

I believe they should torture the man because we’re talking about hundreds of people being killed, and in that situation, it gives them reason to torture him. After being tortured and he still doesn’t say the location of the bombs, maybe they should threaten to torture his wife. He probably would say the location after that. However, I don’t think that the wife should be tortured because it’s not her fault. So if they only threaten to, maybe he’d talk.

  6. Ashly Sosa says:

If he doesn’t want to talk we can just torture the wife or someone that is close to the bomber so that he changes his mind.

  7. Alan Ferreira says:

If it was me i would have taken the bomber’s wife because if you take the wife and torture her you will probably get the information out of her but then maybe she doesn’t know where he is.
Also if you do torture his wife you will save alot of lives if you find out where he is

  8. Zulmarie Clemente says:

I believe that they shouldn’t torture the bombers wife but torture the bomber. His wife hasn’t done anything wrong, she had nothing to do with it. They can act like they are torturing her to get him to talk.

  9. i think that they should torture someone the he know and loved very much because if you have no other choices for you to save hundred of people so go right ahead if you want hurt one people the save hundreds so be it

  10. Khalif says:

They shouldn’t torture his wife they should torture his brother or son because he will crack faster than torturing his wife. Some men don’t care about their wives but very close to their brother and son.

  11. Siara says:

I believe we should torture him instead of his wife and if all fails then torture his wife as a second option. Mostly because he would admit faster by torturing him.

  12. Lawrence Abdul-Price says:

in this situation it is very simple get to the one thing that can break a man or a woman .attack the week emotional part of his body witch would the heart . if they can get to his wife and show that they are playing no games with this man he will budge to save her from a misrable pain she does not deserve . and force him to watch her . he will have to give because she wont no why its happening but he will know why she will come to her fait.

  13. denilson says:

I don’t think that would be right because the wife is innocent and she has nothing to do with the situation.the police need to work there hardest to find the bomb because there are people lives that are on the line.

  14. john christopher blanc says:

i think that they should torture someone the he knows and cares about because if thats what it comes down too and you have no other choice but to save a hundred people then your gonna have to make that sacrifice and torture that one person.

  15. Nina G says:

just let her go, she wasn’t involved in anything with her husband .he should be the one being tortured if anything. i think the madman wouldnt care about the wife because hes crazy and i dont think it would get to him.

  16. Janaya Richards says:

i think that they should torture his wife because it would save hundreds of people’s lives. Who cares if one person is getting hurt, by her getting hurt it saves other people’s lives. When he was planting the bombs, he obviously wasn’t thinking about his wife’s safety and what could happen to her when he was doing what he was doing. And by him seeing his wife hurt it will make him crack and give them the information that they need.

  17. Dave Manasse says:

Yes they should torture the madman’s wife so he could say where he hid the bomb. 1 person should die instead of a 100.If that is the only way to get him to talk they should do it. he loves his wife so when someone is loosing someone that they love they will do anything to save her.

  18. Smooches says:

They Should torture the woman because women can take more pain than men. It’s been proven that women can take more pain than men. She is the his wife for a reason, and he doesn’t want to see her in pain so he will give up faster.

  19. Johnathan Johnson says:

If i were in this situation i would torture anyone close to the bomber. I would torture him first and if it fails to work im torturing his wife then his kids i don’t care. I want him to think i’m the mad bomber and hes the one who has to do the right thing. If he doesn’t give up that information His wife gone get it! if he stays silent i’ma get his Kids involved. What if he doesn’t care about any of those, were going to get family involved, i’m talking mother and father. But hopefully we wont have to go that far and his wife will be enough incentive. Saving hundreds is better that saving none.

  20. aliah michelle says:

they should not torture the wife because she dont have anything to do with the killing

  21. Nayara Goncalves says:

I think that we should torture him with the wife beacuse it is the life of a hundreds of people. That maybe if we do torture the wife the madman will crack and allow them to get to the bombs. Even though i believe it is not the wifes fault but it is the only way to be able to save the hundreds of lives.

  22. Mallory Orozco says:

I believe that they should torture the bomber instead of his wife because its not her fault her husband is crazy. She didn’t do anything wrong and if anything i think threatening him with his own life is more important to his than anything. Or if he has a child that would get to him more

  23. rachael says:

i think they should torture the bomber because millions of people would die .and they shouldnt torture his wife.

  24. Nakia St.Fleur says:

I dont agree with torture at all, because you never really know it the bombs are real. Even if they were, you shouldn’t torture anybody because she could be innocent, and you torture them and they could sue you for all the money you have. & to think about it, hes about to kill hundreds of people. Do you really think he cares about anybody? So torturing them, would’ve been pointless.
